Translation Corner
#11
I was checking the class name translations and i had some doubts about them... particularly from the Dievdirbys and the Krivis.... do they really need to be translated?

In the case of those 2 classes, they belong directly to the Lithuanian mythology. The Krivis is a High priest, but specifically of the Lithuanian religion, whom oversaw the sacred fire on religious ceremonies and funerals [1]. The Dievdirbys in the other hand, is an artisan that specializes on making statues of gods from the Lithuanian and Christian religions [2].

I feel that those names should not get "lost in translation"... It would be like translating the term "Valkyrie" to something like "War Angel"... what do you guys think about this?

That's a good question. hahaha ... There are some terms that weren't translated because of these 'situations' to be user-friendly and easier to understand. I'd maintain the original version, but that is my opinion. Smile

Also they took a few liberties in changing the skill names. Such as Ice Pike being translated to "Ice Wave", or Subzero shield becoming "Freezing Shield", etc.

I don't really know if these changes are alright, but I suppose they should be as similar to the english names as possible, no?

Yup, there are some translations that need revision and 'Turn Undead' is one of them. Thanks for the suggestions. Big Grin

Some skills I translated based on their description in wiki in order to make more sense, like Ice Pike and Subzero Shield (this one I changed the name, but it can also have another one if we look at the description).

And the question, you're right. It's better having most terms translated based on their english names, but there may be different names from the original ones for reasons (like I said above).

I suppose that "Estacas" or "Espinhos" would be more suitable for it though. Overall there just needs to be a slight refinery on a few terms. I personally think that for Cloth Armor, "Tecido" would sound much more lovely than "Pano".
Yeah, there are some portuguese translations that needs more polishment. By now I'm saving all suggestions because I prefer editing all terms at the same time (and it's so slow to update info now Onion Cry).

And thanks for the suggestions and compliment! Big Grin

If you want, you can join ToS Brazil in FB, they're discussing some class translations there.

I never worked on the wiki side, but I promise to be pretty strict and very participative when the spanish repository for the translation comes out. I will try to encourage the spanish community to keep things making sense.

Spanish have many variations due to the large regions it covers and every country speaks different and have different word meanings, but I'm sure we can set a standard that everyone will understand. It is really annoying when you see a translation favouring how things are spoken on certain region rather than making it standard (think of latin american translations, they always tend to have more mexican accent and jokes that are not present on the original source, I want to evade that since it is annoying for the rest of the continent).
