Tos review by CBT players Mana and Mir - part 2

Tos review by CBT players Mana and Mir - part 2

What do you think of the graphics and artwork?

Mana: I can tell a lot of work went into making this a beautiful game. It is very stylized and pleasing on the eye. I wasn't sure how it would work as I am more used to realisim in graphics but the cute style is really working out.

Mir: This map was so beautiful.

Mana: My only issue is that Rhaeger looks too girly! You probably guessed I named him after Rhaeger Targaryen so I wanted him to have light hair but.... He turned out too cute!

Mir: The face, It's the face! Everyone has the same face. The girls and the guys. Mir and Rheager have different hairstyles but they still look too similar. I hope we can change more later. Other than that the graphics are stunning. This is my first time playing a cute game like this. The graphics are really amazing.

Mana: Choices, choices. Mir went Barbarian so I decided to try Hoplite but I never finished the quest for the costume. There were a few costume events. Things kept popping up like cat ears, owls and fried eggs.  I got the red leaves from a treasure chest.

Scroll on the mouse will zoom in and out.

Mir: I got a scroll from the chest. I made the horns.

Mana: There were a few bugs really stole away from the beauty of the game.

This area need a bit of work. Looking forward to seeing it in full action.

What about the BGM?
Mana: The BGM wasn't incoded so I imagine you can already download the whole thing from somewhere.

Mir: It is very good. I like the main theme most of all.

Mana: It was alright. I can't remember where it was, but I was fighting a boss and the BGM was so calm. It didn't seem to match in places. I do like it though.

How are the boss battles

Mir: Too easy! Even at lvl 56 it was still too easy.

Mana: I don't know what it was but there were times I didn't even bother dodging because the boss (or mobs) just didn't do enough damage to even scatch Rheager. It just felt weird. We were thinking maybe it was a bug.  mobs and bosses the same level as you should be doing more damage that 1 - 10. Increassing that heart stat will give you more than enough HP to survive harder battles. I got to about lvl 30 and Rhaeger didn't die once in the game.

Mir: They aren't thrilling at all. Just hack, slash, move out of the way when they attack. They were bit boring for boss fights. I expect it will get more exciting.

Mana: There are a lot of bosses though. Field bosses, quest bosses, box bosses! All over the place. I don't understand Korean well so I was suprised alot. If they were just a little more challenging the shere number of them might be enough to make your heart jump.

Mir: This was the most interesting boss fight as it was a little more challenging to get close to the target. Not so much for classes like wizard I guess. The bosses don't move around the map at all. Once they do it will definatly be a more worthwhile fight.

Mana: Why do you keep changing your equipment?

Mir: I couldn't figure it out. My hammer was enchanted +25 but it wasn't doing any more damage than the unenchanted sword of the same level.

Mana: I had a feeling they wanted people to walk through the game quickly to get as much feedback as possible. So this may not be a good example of what bosses will be like in the final game. CBT players got at most around 38 hours of gameplay (servers went down a few times for 15 - 30 min to fix bugs) and players still made it to lvl 80 maybe higher.

Mir: We were just casully playing on and off after work. Also alternating our characters. I would play a few hours them Mana would play. I was over lvl 50 by Sunday evening, Mana was around lvl 30.

Mana: About the jumping thing. I never noticed. I remember trying it out and getting the I didn't feel there was that much difference.

Mir: I didn't notice either.

What do you think of the stanima system and wear and tear on equipment?

Mana: It's annoying.

Mir: It is very important to keep your stanima up.

Mana: Or you'll be crawling everywhere.

Mir: Just attack the blue crystals in the field and your stanima will be restored.

Mana: Or stock up on those yellow pills. Lots of yellow pills.
Mir: She crawled a lot.

Mana: Like a snail. Cry...stal...cr...ys...t....al...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHqX8Btimus
Tsk, I'll just swallow a pill.

Sometimes there were alot of crystals and sometimes there wearn't. I wonder what it will be like when there are more players. It definitly got more challanging during the weekend when the channels where reduced from around 20 to only 5.

Mir: I got the feeling each class consumes stanima differently. Wizard seemed to run out quicker than swordsman.

Mana: Then there was that armor thing! What was that!? Luckly Mir told me just in time or I would have lost all my equiped items!

Mir: Yeah, Your items go though wear and tear the longer you use them. So you have to get them repaired in the city. Be sure to do that everytime you return.

Mana: *sigh* But I see why it is an important part of the game.

Mir: It is a good system from protecting the server from auto players. If you manage a system to play on auto the character will eventually run out of stanima and be unable to fight. Even if you manage to get by that your equipment will eventually dissappear too if you don't go to the smith and fix it

Mana: Yeah,  You have to do the leg work in this game yourself. Preventing auto play seems to be a priority. It was a huge problem on GE back in the day. It was too easy to auto and eventually the servers were overun by bots.

Can you give us a tour around town?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GCgc_eAusI

Mana: I had to cut this because I accidently left the recording on. it ended up with no sound ^^;
Anyway, The town is quite bug. lots of people to talk to. My korean isn't good so I only talked to the important people.First up is the beast lady Christina. You can get your companion from her but they are expencive. I didn't see anyone with them till the last day. I only had about 40,000 silver on me. Not nearly enough.
Next up is the accessories stall. Necklaced and bracelets,
Then the weapon store. Take note of the prices,
Then the tools store were you can get your pots and srolls and different kinds of wood! NXP items include a red ox drink that looks suspiciously familiar.  ^^
Somone had built a fire. Is you press the insert key you can sit down and enjoy the fires benifits regardles of who made the fire. The fires effect on you can be seen in the top left corner.
Then there is the most important guy. The smith, I think. This guy will fix your equipment from ware and tear. Visit him eveytime and pick 수리 (the second tab) from the menu,  Select all, agree and confirm the price.

Take a quick look at the market place then the forge. The portal is at the center of the map. I ended up speaking to a cleric master I think. Then took a shortcut jumping over buildings to get to the other side of town but the gate was locked up. I don't really know what Pokoreu Mama is supposd to be ^^;

Not the first time I read everyone consider the game too easy, perhaps it was IMC fault when taking consideration on the people getting used to controls and kids playing this (remember they are trying to keep the ALL rating from the Game Rating Board).

Really interesting. (for me at least)

Thanks again for your impressions! It really helps a lot for us. Blush

The biggest mistakes IMC made with the game design wise are:

A.  Count storyline monsters as "bosses".

B.  Making these "bosses" mandatory, so it created a situation where both making it easy and making it hard are good ideas for different reasons.  Now IMC have to balance it to please those who want challenge in a quest "boss", but also make sure the game is not a virtual gauntlet just to level up.

Angel I am happy with both hard and easy boss, so I am not causing the problem at least.

I have diagnosticated apathy, and something I look for is adventure no matter what. To feel adventure I need challenges that I think I can't complete, otherwise get bored and drop-off, so I really hope this game don't remain so easy as people is telling with bunnyhopping and everything else.

If it is about adventure, then you should be very disappointed at whole the game right now, not just difficulty.  The game is charming, but level up is still linear.

I can't feel a sense of adventure and challenge from mmorpg if it is not super difficult.  If Tree of Savior want adventure from hardship, then players need to die in a few hits from all monsters, solo play should be almost impossible, death should have big penalty, and there should not be exp quests or too many story bosses.  Bosses should all be extremely difficult and serve some greater purpose.  Anything less does not produce enough sense of adventure.

No one makes difficult mmo anymore, so all mmorpg are easy.  A little difficulty increase doesn't do anything for me.  It has to be soul crushingly hard, but fair enough so it does not feel cheap.  If tos does that, I would love it so much more, but it also means not many would play it. Undecided

I'm actually really looking forward to the next CBT. The more we talk about it the more we realize that we were only aloud to scratch the surface of the game. One of Mir's bosses didn't even attack him at all. That's obviously not right. So I wouldn't judge the game based on what you have seen and heard about the boss fights. I'm sure there will be a lot more to look forward to there.

You may be right. Thanks so much for pointing that out.
I totally forgot to ask Mir about it. He only gave me a quick comment on the video. I'll ask him about this in more detail.

I agree, with that, but that can be acceptable, one of the aspects of RPG on video games is the grinding, and that is something that console games are trying to evade nowadays, but as for online game that is a must. Personally I don't like to grind unless I found it very rewarding, in RO case I felt the curve pretty high so that was a turn off for me.

I think one of the most successful RPG games right now is Dark Souls. Everyone is aware of how difficult is everything (shame I don't have money for a PS3 to play it). But still I would prefer something easier because just because otherwise the player base will be lower and the difficulty would be unreal to a game with fairy tale graphics like this haha.

The only MMO aside from MU I've played is Aura Kingdom and it has some crazy instances that you really need strategy or otherwise all your party get crushed, I want to see that on this game. Same as WOW, everyone plans their strategy before raiding.

But I strongly agree with something: bosses gotta be hard, and gotta be really rewarding.
